Hi!
Someone suggested that I post my situation here to get people’s advice on whether I’m being scammed or not. Story is as follows:
I’m currently selling an old car of mine that has a bit of collector’s interest, enough that multiple people from out of state contacted me about the car after I posted the For Sale ad on a forum. I decided to accept an offer from an individual who’s on the other side of the USA.
As a nonrefundable deposit, he sent me a Paypal Friends & Family payment. Paypal says the account is verified, but the name on the account is different from the name of the buyer I’ve been talking to. When asked, he said that the Paypal account is his mom’s. I called Paypal and the representative I spoke with did not seem concerned and said that Friends and Family payments are safe and cannot be withdrawn other than if fraud is claimed.
For the remainder of the vehicle’s sale price, we agreed to do a bank wire transfer. From reading up on wire transfers, my impression is that they’re 100% safe for the seller. The plan is to get the wire transfer and verify the funds are in my account before working with the buyer to get the car picked up by whatever car shipper he hires.
Does this all sound fine or am I being scammed?
I appreciate any advice. Thanks!
